Knyaw

My own app

I designed and built Knyaw and keep it running. Karen speakers help check the words.

Short recording of knyaw.app on laptop and phone: learning to read Sgaw Karen, the lessons and the letters

The question

Sgaw Karen is the first language of more than a million people. Families carried it out of Myanmar and the camps on the Thai border, and their children now often grow up speaking something else first. Knyaw exists to keep reading the language alive: free, and open to everyone.

What I built

  • Teaches you to read Karen letters and words, one card at a time, with no account.
  • Available in ten languages, including English, Dutch, Thai and Burmese.
  • A word list, every letter one by one, stories, and guides about the language.
  • Words are checked against trusted dictionaries, and Karen speakers help check them too.
  • Free forever: no ads, no paywall, and an honest page about where donations go.

Where it stands

  • Live at knyaw.app.
  • Over 2,000 words checked and live, across 39 topics.

Word count as shown on knyaw.app, 9 October 2026.
